Background:
Opened in 1845; together with 1895 extension, original buildings form nucleus of the school; of Cotswold design, buildings situated centre of village; focal point for community. To mark school's 150th anniversary, parents raised more than #8,000 to open new library and computer area; it is expected the school will be housed in new purpose-built accommodation by 2004. Close links with community; also seeks partnership with a range of schools across the world, including primary school in East London, school for street children in Delhi, India, and a primary school in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, at which a member of staff from Sherston spent a year, thanks to a Commonwealth Teachers Exchange Programme; now establishing link with another school in Zimbabwe. In addition to fundraising for the school in Delhi, school was early member of the Operation Christmas Child scheme, which delivers parcels to children in Eastern Europe; played important part in village initiative to send convoys of aid to the area. Visits often arranged to local businesses; Year 6 pupils visit Tintagel for a week's residential field course. Extra-curricular activities include music, netball, football, chess club and computer club. Members of the chess club have represented Wiltshire at national events.
