Background:
Winterslow is proud to be one of the oldest primary schools in the country. Founded in the early 1830s, it first moved onto part of its present site in 1833. The original thatched schoolroom survived until 1967. The present building is an expansion of the Victorian schoolroom and schoolhouse, boasting two mobile classrooms, a library and a heated outdoor swimming pool for use in summer. The 'caring but stimulating' curriculum aims to produce 'rounded, self-confident individuals'. Those with special educational needs receive specialist help. All children participate in educational day trips, with residential visits for older children. Pupils can receive tuition in the recorder, violin and cello. There is involvement in various sporting activities, often in the form of inter-school tournaments, and physical education concentrates on team games and gymnastics. Various after-school clubs are on offer to older children. The school benefits from its continuing 'close partnership' with the church and sees itself as 'the heart of the community'. Villagers have been 'actively encouraged' to involve themselves in school projects such as the 'Millennium Garden'. The 'thriving, energetic' Friends' Association organises fundraising, chiefly through the annual May Fair, a village fete day. 'The school is continuing to develop and always aspires to achieve a high standard and quality of education for all of its children.' The school aims to provide a caring but stimulating environment where each and every child is treated as an individual with their own special needs and talents.
