Background:
Originally founded in 1850, the school moved to its present site in 1873. The building was sympathetically extended in 1969 to accommodate children from local villages where schools were closed. To accommodate the increasing number of children in the school two further classrooms were completed in April 2000 and November 2003. The attractive and well-equipped school has its own kitchen and the use of the adjoining village hall. Extensive playing fields on site give ample opportunity for a range of outdoor physical activities and environmental investigations. It has a computer suite, central courtyard, flexible working areas, an expanding library and full use of computers in all classes. Pupils participate in a range of sporting events and activities and the school enjoys success at a local level, regularly winning the small schools awards in athletics, football and swimming. Community involvement is strength of the school, particularly the ANZAC links. Industry links led to the school being regional finalist in Aim High for Industry Awards in 1994 and 1997. It has been recognised by Education Extra for the range and quality of out of school activities on offer. It also supports selected charities and encourages children to take the initiative in organising their own fundraising for national and international appeals. In 2000 the school gained Investor in People status and was runner up for the Wiltshire Business of the Year Award for training and development of staff. It has consistently received a government award for Achievement and Improvement in 2001, 2002 and 2003. The school has also received a Beacon Status in September 2002. The school is committed to creating a harmonious and stimulating environment, where all are encouraged to achieve their maximum potential through development of their knowledge, skills and understanding.
