Background:
Built in 1971, Saint Edmund's Roman Catholic Primary School serves the town of Calne and the nearby RAF station at Lyneham. The buildings are set in three acres of landscaped grounds on the northern side of the town. The interior of the school is of an open-plan design, with classrooms opening onto large shared practical areas. There is a large hall, administrative rooms and a kitchen used for in-house catering. The school is affiliated to Bath Spa University and many trainee teachers undertake part of their initial teacher training at the school each year. Pupils have contributed to public art with local artists in connection with the re-development of Calne town centre. The school offers various extra-curricular activities including football, tag rugby, netball, country dancing, chess, drama, art, gymnastics, dance and cycling proficiency training. More than a quarter of pupils have instrumental music lessons and there is a school orchestra. The Catholic faith is central to the whole life of the school. The school is committed to the development of the whole child and sees this wholeness in terms of Christ.
