Background:
The brand new comprehensive opened in September 2000 to provide a third secondary school to cater for the growth in housing in Chippenham and some of the surrounding area. The school was housed in temporary accommodation on the site of Hardenhuish School in its first academic year, before relocating to its permanent site in September 2001. It now occupies new buildings on a greenfield site on Stanley Lane, off the London Road, in south east Chippenham. The school was built under the PFI initiative and the project, which includes the rebuild of two existing schools, is one of the biggest in the country. The school will eventually house 900 students under one roof and hopes to accommodate post-16 students in the future. 'Our aim is to take the best of traditional aspects pf education and blend in with the latest understanding of how students learn. We want learning to be fun, too. Abbeyfield is a school where everyone feels safe, happy and successful, a place where we all learn'.
