Background:
Built in the 1950s, New Close is housed in 'spacious' buildings with seven classrooms, a hall, a stage with lights and microphones and a 'well-stocked' library. The 'extensive' playing fields are enclosed by a fence for security reasons, and a recent tree-planting project has provided shade for the children in the summer. Extra-curricular activities include Japanese, French, football, chess, art and computers and the school was recently awarded a Healthy Schools Award. A Japanese teacher also visits the school to introduce pupils to the culture of Japan. The school is proud of its fund-raising activities, and supports the Wessex Children's Hospice. 'We aim to provide a warm, caring and safe environment, where all children and staff are equally valued and where all children are taught to be literate and numerate'.
