Background:

Lacock School was opened in 1821 to provide education for the youngsters of the village of Lacock. It was built using the stones and tiles from the cottages which had, until then, occupied its site. The school was extended in 1869 in preparation for the 1870 education act which guaranteed free elementary education for all children. Since then, however, the structure of the school has remained largely untouched with the exception of the addition of a new toilet block. The interior of the school is now somewhat different however, particularly as a result of the fact that the school now houses 66 children whereas it once served 213 pupils in rather more cramped conditions. The school values its links with village life and its community especially with the church. Many local inhabitants visit the school to help with activities such as reading, cooking and sewing. Extra-curricular activites include French, judo, country dancing, cycling proficiency and first aid, and the children have been involved in two community plays organised by the Theatre in the Downs. The local garden centre provides a link to local industry. Fundraising includes support for charities such as NSPCC, Children in Need, Operation Christmas Child and children contributed to an appeal for knitted hats to Bosnia.
